*After this statement was released, Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the U.S. and Mexico have reached an agreement to delay tariffs for a month. In exchange, Mexico will be putting 10,000 National Guard troops on the Mexico/U.S. border as conversations between the countries continue.
On February 1, 2025, President Donald J. Trump

An Executive Order imposing a 25% tariff (ad valorem rate of duty) on all goods entering the United States from Mexico. An Executive Order imposing a 25% tariff (ad valorem rate of duty) on all goods (except energy resources) entering the United States from Canada. Energy resources will be subject to a 10% tariff. An Executive Order imposing a 10% tariff (ad valorem rate of duty) on imports from China. Trade Authority: These new tariffs are being implemented under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Under IEEPA, the President has the ability to take certain actions quickly after declaring a national emergency. The President may terminate the emergency. The U.S. Congress, “could terminate the underlying national emergency by enacting a joint resolution of disapproval.”
      Source: Congressional Research Service
Timeline: The tariffs will go into effect at 12:01 a.m. eastern time on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. There is currently no date by which the tariffs will sunset.
Existing Tariffs: The new tariffs articulated in these Executive Orders will be imposed on top of any prior and existing “duties, fees, exactions, or charges applicable to such imported articles.”
Items Covered by the Tariffs: At this time, it appears that all items will be subject to the 25% tariff except in the case of Canada, where a lower 10% tariff will be applied to energy resources. The Trump Administration will publish a Federal Register notice containing the specific HTSUS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States) codes. This notice is not yet available.
Goods in Transit: The Executive Orders concerning Canada, Mexico, and China note that the duty will apply, “except that goods entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, after such time that were loaded onto a vessel at the port of loading or in transit on the final mode of transport prior to entry into the United States before 12:01 a.m. eastern time on February 1, 2025, shall not be subject to such additional duty, only if the importer certifies to CBP as specified in the Federal Register notice.”
De Minimis: The Executive Orders revoke duty-free “de minimis” treatment for goods coming into the U.S. from Mexico, Canada, and China that are subject to the order. According to CBP, “De minimis provides admission of articles free of duty and of any tax imposed on or by reason of importation, but the aggregate fair retail value in the country of shipment of articles imported by one person on one day and exempted from the payment of duty shall not exceed $800.”

Drawback: The Executive Orders note that “no drawback shall be available with respect to the duties imposed pursuant to this order.”
Exclusions: At this time, there is no language in the Executive Orders concerning an exclusion process.
Escalation: The Executive Orders include language stating that the U.S. may escalate these actions if the other nations take steps to retaliate against U.S. exports and goods.
      Canada:
On February 1, 2025, Canada announced plans to impose 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. items. The official statement from the Canadian government noted that these tariffs will be imposed in phases.
The first phase “will include tariffs on $30 billion in goods imported from the U.S., effective February 4, 2025, when the U.S tariffs are applied. The list includes products such as orange juice, peanut butter, wine, spirits, beer, coffee, appliances, apparel, footwear, motorcycles, cosmetics, and pulp and paper. A detailed list of these goods will be made available shortly.” A second phase of tariffs, which will address $125 billion worth of exports from the U.S., will not be imposed until after a 21-day comment period. They will include “products such as passenger vehicles and trucks, including electric vehicles, steel and aluminum products, certain fruits and vegetables, aerospace products, beef, pork, dairy, trucks and buses, recreational vehicles, and recreational boats.” Source: Canada announces $155B tariff package in response to unjustified U.S. tariffs – Canada.ca
      Mexico:
On February 1, 2025, Mexico pledged to retaliate against the U.S. tariffs. Press reports indicate that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has directed her government to enact “Plan B.” MEMA is awaiting further details on this action.
      China:
China has reacted and pledged retaliatory action against the tariff announcement. However, no specific details were available as of the morning of February 2, 2025. MEMA is monitoring the announcements from the Chinese government on this action.
MEMA will continue to closely monitor these developments and provide our members with timely updates as more details emerge. As we assess the impact of these tariffs, we are actively engaging with members to gather insights and determine the best path forward. Your feedback is invaluable in understanding how these policies affect businesses, employees, customers, and communities.
Be on the lookout for details about member briefings next week, where we will provide further updates and opportunities for discussion, MEMA said.

Hunter Engineering has introduced a website that breaks down sophisticated ADAS procedures and terminology into easy-to-understand topics, as a means to help simplify the ever-complicating conversations around ADAS.
Available for free to access and use, Hunter’s interactive ADAS Learning Tool works on touchscreen tablets or desktop computers. Designed to assist counter workers or allow customers to explore on their own, the tool succinctly answers many of the why, when and how questions both shops and consumers have regarding ADAS calibrations,
link hidden, please login to view explained. “ADAS has received plenty of attention the past several years, but comparatively little of it deals with talking to actual vehicle owners,” said Tommy Maitz, Hunter director of marketing. “This learning tool will help shops have more informative and effective conversations with their customers about which systems are included on their cars, and the need for calibrations.”
The tool begins by separating ADAS procedures into four main categories – camera, radar, ultrasound, internal – and provides brief overviews and images for each type to aid with in-person discussions. From there, a user can examine the color-coded vehicle image to learn about the specific functions and locations of ADAS components, and when calibrations would be recommended or required.
Also included on the page are extensive lists of the names OEMs use for the ADAS systems across their models, color-coded to locations on the image. Although the names vary widely across the dozens of OEMs, the functions usually fall into one of the four main categories, Hunter said.
“While shops generally know much more about ADAS than their customers at this point, there’s still some confusion and uncertainty when they talk to them,” Maitz said. “This tool is a quick and easy way for everyone to understand the concepts and get on the same ADAS page.”

Autel announced its tablets have been certified by the Auto Authentication Authority (AutoAuth) to access Mercedes-Benz vehicles’ Security Gateway (SGW). As a result, “Autel tablet users can now access more vehicle brands’ secure gateways than any aftermarket tool using the authentication service,” the company explained in a news release about the certification.
In addition, Autel negotiated with Volkswagen/Audi Group to add SGW access capability to its diagnostics and service tablets, and, last month, Autel added the functionality to its tablets. Users can purchase single VW/Audi VIN/24-hour sessions or unlimited VINs/full-year access plans.
“Increasingly, automakers are securing critical vehicle systems behind gateway modules. We have prioritized getting our tablets authorized to access these systems and enabling our technicians to service the vehicles they need to. Autel has consistently led the aftermarket in getting this functionality to our products and technicians,” said Maurice Miller,
link hidden, please login to view vice president of customer success. Once Autel tablet owners register their tool for Mercedes-Benz vehicle SGW access with AutoAuth, they can perform restricted functions, including clearing codes, active tests, special functions, service resets, coding and adaptations, and Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) calibrations, according to
link hidden, please login to view. Mercedes-Benz vehicles with the SGW include 2021 and newer CLE (236), GLC (254), EQE (294), EQE (295), EQS (296), S (223), and C (206) models.
Mercedes-Benz is the latest automaker to authorize Autel tablets to access SGW-protected systems via AutoAuth. Technicians can also access Nissan and Stellantis (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Maserati) vehicles with an SGW via an AutoAuth-registered Autel tablet, the company explained.

MANN+HUMMEL announced the parts kit for its MANN-FILTER fuel filter PU 10 023/1 z KIT for pickups makes maintenance easier, thanks to the patented disassembly tool. It offers a very high degree of particle separation and efficient water separation, while also being ideally equipped for future fuel filtration requirements, the company said.
“Efficient, fast, and clean – this is how the significantly improved handling of the PU 10 023/1 z KIT can be summed up,” explained Frank Bartel, product manager fuel filters at MANN+HUMMEL. This is made possible by the innovative handhold developed by
link hidden, please login to view, which facilitates disassembly and is included with every filter, and by the modern and functional design of the filter element and housing cover. Changing the filter without this grip, however, requires a lot of force and is only possible with pliers or similar tools. Resistant to Dirt and Water
“The innovative filter has an extremely high separation efficiency of more than 96 percent with a particle size of four micrometers,” MANN+HUMMEL said. “This means that 9,600 out of 10,000 incoming particles are retained. For context, these particles are up to 25 times smaller than a human hair.”
It is not only impurities that can have a negative effect on the components of the injection system, but also water droplets. This applies particularly to modern common rail systems, which place high demands on fuel quality. The MANN-FILTER PU 10 023/1 z KIT filters out more than 95 percent of the water contained in the fuel and operates in three stages, the company said.
In the first step, the filter medium reliably removes solid impurities from the diesel. The second filter stage works with a coalescing fleece that absorbs the finest water droplets from the fuel/water emulsion and combines them into much larger droplets. In the third filtration step, a water-repellent screen fabric ensures that the enlarged droplets do not enter the injection system. MANN+HUMMEL said it has developed this screen fabric in such a way that it is elastic and can withstand the mechanical requirements of pressure and temperature both during operation and at standstill. Bartel explains: “Thanks to its flexible design, it can effectively absorb the forces that arise and so has proven to be particularly robust, including in situations such as when the fuel freezes.”
The seal materials of this fuel filter are resistant to standard diesel, biodiesel variants, and novel synthetic diesel fuels such as hydrogenated vegetable oils (HVO). They have the corresponding OE approvals and ensure a permanent hold as well as the complete sealing of the filter.
      Series Supplier

link hidden, please login to view said it has already started series production of this highly efficient fuel filter for a renowned vehicle manufacturer. The filter is available on the independent automotive aftermarket in original equipment quality as a PU 10 023/1 z KIT for various Ford Ranger pickup models and complements the extensive MANN-FILTER product range. MANN+HUMMEL has been granted a patent for the disassembly handhold by the German Patent and Trademark Office as well as in other countries. Worldwide, more than 1,200 researchers and developers at MANN+HUMMEL work on pioneering solutions with the aim of creating real added value and optimally meeting customer needs, the company said.
