Berry Rallies to 18th-Place Finish at Atlanta after Damage from Multi-Car Incident

  • It was Berry’s fifth career NASCAR Cup Series start. He rolled off the grid from the 21st position and took the opening stage to adapt to superspeedway-style racing in the Next Gen car, ending stage one in 28th. The Hendersonville, Tennessee, native improved to 11th in stage two.
  • During the final stage of the race, Berry was battling inside the top 10 when he was involved in a multi-car incident on lap 190. The team made repairs and Berry was able to rebound for an 18th-place finish.

Josh Berry qualified 21st for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway in the No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. It was Berry’s third race filling in for the injured Chase Elliott as he continues to recover from a fractured tibia. Berry took the green flag for his first Cup Series superspeedway-style race and used the opening laps to get a good feel for his Chevrolet. The 32-year-old driver was scored in 20th when the first caution flag of the race was displayed on lap 11. Opting not to pit, Berry lined up in that same position after choosing the top lane and battled inside the top 25 once the race resumed. Berry got shuffled to the back of the main pack on lap 42, but was undeterred from the loss of track position as he made his way back up to 28th to close out the stage at lap 60.

During the stage break, Berry reported to the team that the NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet was a little free on entry, but the balance got better on the longer run. Interim crew chief Tom Gray called the Hendersonville, Tennessee, native to pit road for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment. Berry took the green flag for stage two from the 26th position on lap 68 and continued his forward progress, settling in behind Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson in the 21st position. Berry was running in 15th when teams began making scheduled green-flag pit stops on lap 127. The driver of the No. 9 stayed out until Gray called him in for a fuel-only stop on lap 138. Back out on the track, Berry made his way to as high as ninth before taking the green-and-white checkered flag in 11th to end stage two.

The No. 9 team made a stop for four tires and fuel under the stage-ending caution, sending Berry back out to start the final stage in 17th. After beginning the stage in the top lane, he made a move to the bottom and used that to his advantage to work his way to 10th on lap 182. Berry continued to race inside the top 10 until a multi-car incident occurred on lap 190, collecting the No. 9 Chevrolet. The NASCAR Xfinity Series regular was able to drive the NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet away and brought it to pit road for repairs. The team worked hard over the course of two pit stops to fix up the front-end damage, and Berry lined up 25th for the lap 200 restart. Less than 10 laps later another incident brought out the yellow flag, giving the team another opportunity to work on the No. 9. Berry was scored in the 23rd position for the restart on lap 216 and reported early in the run that the NAPA Auto Parts Camaro felt better after the most recent repairs. He battled hard in the final stint of the race, climbing his way back inside the top 20 and ultimately scoring an 18th-place finish in the 260-lap event.

“I thought it was a solid day for the No. 9 NAPA Chevy,” Berry said. “I feel like we definitely improved. We got up there in the top 10 and we were pretty solid before that wreck. After that, the car was just a little too damaged to be too aggressive. All-in-all, we finished the race, learned a lot and had some fun.”

      Most important things to check after hitting a bad pothole

      With the recent announcement that MotorTrendTV has ceased production of its automotive enthusiast programming, including Hot Rod Garage, Roadkill and its affiliated titles, as well as Garage Squad, my social media (and the internet in general) has been filled with doomsday prophecies about the end of automotive programming everywhere. 
      At a time of the year when I normally spend a lazy Sunday flipping channels rather than turning wrenches, the idea of not riding along virtually with Finnegan and Freiburger every week certainly caught me off guard. Fortunately, many reports of MotorTrendTV’s death have been greatly exaggerated, and none of us gearheads will be forced to interact socially with actual people rather than watching car shows in our off-hours. Here’s why…
      The MotorTrend network is currently part of the Warner Brothers Discovery (WBD) family of media channels. Warner Brothers merged with Discovery back in 2022, and in the spring of 2024, all existing MT streaming content was moved from its own platform to Discovery+ and Max. MotorTrend Studios was a separate division of WBD, responsible for producing content that appeared on MotorTrendTV. In November, content creators Joe Zolper (Garage Squad), David Freiburger (Roadkill), Alex Taylor (Hot Rod Garage) and Ian Rousseau (Full Custom Garage) have all taken to social media, confirming the rumors that production has ceased on those shows formerly produced by MotorTrend Studios. 
      Production had already wrapped on some of these affected shows, so there are still completed episodes that have yet to air. According to motortrend.com, “new content” from the cancelled MotorTrend Studios shows will be released throughout 2025 and into 2026. In the interim, many of the former MT hosts and other on-air talent are migrating back to the YouTube channels that originally spawned many of MotorTrend’s most popular programs.
      It appears that the majority of MotorTrend programming for the near future will consist of re-runs of MT properties, as well as shows produced by companies not owned by the MotorTrend Group. Brenton Productions, headquartered in Tampa, FL, is currently promoting new episodes of Two Guys Garage, Build for Off-Road and TruckU, although no new information exists officially from Brenton regarding new episodes of All Girls Garage, Car Fix or Four Wheeler. With Ian Johnson scheduled to host Build for Off-Road, as well as his own YouTube channel (Big Tire Garage), it looks as though we’ve seen the last episode of Four Wheeler.
      In Springfield, OR, Mark Worman and The Division Productions have already dropped Season 20 of Graveyard Carz, and across the pond, UK presenter Mike Brewer has confirmed that his long-running series Wheeler Dealers will return in 2025, although spinoff series Wheeler Dealers Dream Car is officially cancelled. Restoration Garage, a series following David Grainger and his shop in Ontario, Canada, as well as Dan Short’s Norfolk, VA-based show Fantomworks were both cancelled prior to the recent MotorTrend upheaval, but are enjoying new life on their respective YouTube channels.
      Time will tell how the future of shows like these will play out, but for now, it looks like those of us who can’t get enough of cars and parts during the work week still have something to look forward to on weekends!

The 28-year-old driver finished stage one in fourth and followed that up with a 31st-place result in stage two after short pitting. In the final stage, Elliott took over the lead on lap 81 during the pit cycle prior to visiting pit road on lap 84 for four tires and fuel. Rejoining the race in the 12th position, he battled back to fourth before the checkered flag waved. The Dawsonville, Georgia, native advanced to second in the driver points standings and is now just 14 markers behind the leader. Chase Elliott and the No. 9 NAPA Gold Filters team qualified fourth for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Sonoma Raceway, leading Hendrick Motorsports’ four-car contingent. Elliott’s No. 9 NAPA Gold Filters Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 showed speed from the drop of the green flag. He maintained his fourth-place running position in the opening laps. When the caution flag was displayed on lap three, Elliott relayed to crew chief Alan Gustafson that the NAPA Gold Filters Chevy’s handling wasn’t bad. Opting to restart from the outside lane in the third row, the 28-year-old driver retook the fourth position on lap seven and remained there until the yellow flag waved again on lap 16. Staying out under the caution, he restarted from third on lap 19 and was scored in fourth when another incident brought out the caution the very same lap. The No. 9 team opted not to pit, and Elliott took the green flag from the second row on lap 23. With the remainder of the stage going caution-free, the 2020 Cup Series champion took the green-and-white checkered flag in the fourth position at the conclusion of lap 25.
      Elliott remained on the track during the stage break, lining up third to start the second segment of the race on lap 30. After initially holding onto the third position, Elliott got loose and slipped to fourth before the caution came out on lap 32. Once again, the team opted not to pit under the yellow. This time, Elliott chose the outside lane for the lap-35 restart. He was scored fifth when another incident slowed the race just one lap later. Staying out, Elliott lined up fifth on lap 40. A chaotic restart triggered another caution, with the driver of the No. 9 Chevy being scored seventh at the time of the yellow flag. As part of the team’s strategy, Elliott again did not visit pit road. He restarted seventh on lap 43 and improved to sixth before coming to pit road under the green flag on lap 51 for four tires and fuel. He re-entered the track and laid down the fastest lap of the race before ending stage two in the 31st position on lap 55.
      “I feel like my balance is pretty good here. Just have to put it together,” was the report from Elliott under the stage-ending caution. He took the green flag for the final stage from the 25th position on lap 60 and improved to 15th before teams began making their final pit stops of the race on lap 68. Elliott remained on the track and took over the lead on lap 81. Just three laps later, Gustafson called his driver to pit road for four fresh tires and fuel. Elliott rejoined the race in the 12th position and re-entered the top 10 with 23 laps to go. He continued to press forward and was up to seventh with four laps remaining. He gained three more positions to earn a fourth-place result when the checkered flag waved.
      The result was Elliott’s fourth top-five finish at Sonoma in the Cup Series and his sixth top-five of the 2024 season. A strong points day moved Elliott up to second in the driver points standings, just 14 markers behind the leader.
      “It was a normal road course race,” Elliott said. “I felt like we were on the right strategy, I just lost too much time there early in the race. I fell back a few rows and felt like our group that we were racing against were who we were probably going to be racing for the win. Fell behind there early; lost a couple of rows and just never could get it back. I’m not sure I had the pace Kyle (Larson, race winner) had, but thought we were a solid top-three to five car and that’s where we finished. We’ll try again next week.”
