LIQUI MOLY Mourns Passing of Peter Szarafinski

LIQUI MOLY is mourning the sudden death of Peter Szarafinski, 47, the longtime head of media relations international for the company.

“The terrible news reached us just before Christmas Eve,” Managing Director Günter Hiermaier said. “Unfathomable. The great loss of a valued and extremely popular colleague.”

At the beginning of 2010, the trained journalist took up the newly created position of head of media relations international at LIQUI MOLY headquarters in Ulm, Germany.

“During the past 13 years, Dr. Peter Szarafinski had greatly developed and advanced the public relations work in our foreign markets,” Hiermaier said. “With his knowledge, dedication and high work ethic, he has played a decisive role in the positive impact of our company. His sudden death is also such a huge loss because he was such a likable and popular colleague.”

After graduating from high school in Füssen, Szarafinski completed an internship at Allgäuer Zeitung and worked there as an editor before deciding to study journalism and history at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. He then took up a position in corporate communications at the Beiersdorf Group. Parallel to his work at LIQUI MOLY, he completed his doctorate with the historical research book “Rüstung und Politisches System” (“Armaments and Political System”).

In addition to his interest in history, he was an enthusiastic sailing and paragliding pilot. In 2016, he flew from the Allgäu region to the North Cape of Norway and back again with a friend from the Füssen air sports club.

“Our thoughts are with his family and partner,” Hiermaier added.

      BBB Industries Announces Passing of Founder Donald Bigler

      BBB Industries announced the passing of its founder and chairman emeritus, Donald (Don) G. Bigler, at the age of 91.
      “On behalf of BBB Industries, our board and our management team, I offer our deepest condolences to the Bigler family,” said Duncan Gillis, CEO of BBB Industries. “Don was not just one of BBB’s founders, he was a friend, mentor and an inspiration to many within the company. I already miss his friendship.”
      Bigler founded BBB alongside his sons, Jeff and Bruce Bigler, who live in the Mobile area. Together, they grew the company from a small, regional remanufacturer of rotating electrical parts into one of the largest and most successful sustainable manufacturers in the world.
      Bigler had three great loves: his wife, Linda; his family; and his work.
      A Missouri farm boy, he began his career in manufacturing at Aerojet General Corp. in Downey, California. While working at Aerojet, he attended college at night to earn his engineering degree. Bigler was program manager on the Polaris Program and was named Engineering Manager of the Year. As a result, he was promoted to plant manager for 13 years.
      In 1968, he changed companies and became president of Fansteel in Los Angeles. After only two years there, Bigler decided it was time to return home to Missouri. In 1970, Bigler joined Teledyne Industries, where he was president of Teledyne Neosho in Neosho, Missouri.
      In 1974, Bigler moved to Mobile, Alabama. There he was president of Teledyne Continental Motors, a leading general aircraft-engine manufacturer. Ultimately, Bigler became a group executive for Teledyne Industries. He remained with Teledyne for more than 25 years.
      In 1987, Bigler and his sons, Jeff and Bruce, founded and built BBB Industries LLC.
      Bigler’s many awards include recognition at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., for designing and manufacturing the engines of the Voyager aircraft. He also received the General Aviation Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics; the Bolivar, Missouri, High School Hall of Fame Distinguished Alumni Award; and the NAPA Partnership Award.
      A visitation is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, at the Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. A second visitation is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, followed by funeral services.

      MEMA Mourns Passing Of Aftermarket Veteran Steve Handschuh

      Steve Handschuh, a highly respected automotive aftermarket veteran who joined the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) in 2006, died on Aug. 22.
      A native of Baltimore, Handschuh joined MEMA as president and chief operating officer of MEMA’s Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA) division and was named president and CEO of MEMA in 2013. Handschuh retired in December 2018.
      An aftermarket veteran of more than 40 years, Handschuh is known for his service to NAPA Auto Parts/Genuine Parts Co. for 18 years, including serving as NAPA president from 1998 to 2004. Handschuh later served as senior vice president, commercial, at AutoZone.
      He began his career as an outside salesman for Mighty Auto Parts, where he rose to vice president of sales and marketing.
      “MEMA and our industry have lost a great one,” said Bill Long, MEMA president and CEO. “Steve was a dynamic leader, consummate professional and friend to all who worked with and for him at MEMA, and he left a tremendous legacy from his leadership. He will be mourned by the entire MEMA family, both employees and membership.
      “Steve was a man of integrity and always spoke highly of his wife, Joann, and children, making them his top priority. He was deeply involved in serving in his local Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall and helping its young community. As a son of Charm City, Steve was a lifelong Orioles fan. Steve was also passionate about music and was undoubtably a superfan of The Beatles.”
      In 2018, Handschuh received the MEMA Triangle Award – the organization’s highest honor – for his vision, passion and dedication to the interests of the automotive industry.
