Since the beginning of the year, drivers of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y all over the world have reported an irritating squeaking sound.

In response, MEYLE AG is unveiling a solution at Automechanika 2022: the new MEYLE HD control arm for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.

development team identified the problem and developed an improved spare part that reliably restores peace and quiet, according to the company.

Developed from the ground up, the new control arm for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles will be presented to the general public for the first time at Automechanika in Hall 4, Stand D41, from Sept. 13-17. The high-quality product will be available to Tesla drivers and workshops around the globe from early 2023.

MEYLE offers a technically redeveloped solution that ensures Tesla’s typical driving fun – without the irritating squeaking. Another benefit: Thanks to collaboration with ClimatePartner, the MEYLE part is climate-neutral.

“Many everyday objects can begin to squeak after a certain period of time,” said Stefan Bachmann, head of steering & suspension at MEYLE. “But we weren’t expecting this to happen with the Tesla. We’re connected with car enthusiasts around the world and always have our finger on the pulse of the latest trends and acute issues. Particularly when it comes to sensitive suspension technology, we immediately set out in search of a potential solution. Because we’re driven by principle, we wanted to get to the bottom of this strange squeaking sound straightaway.”

After numerous evaluations, the development team determined that the Tesla control arm had been designed with insufficient moisture protection. Rain drains directly from the windscreen onto the control arm and penetrates the ball joint, which ultimately leads to the unwelcome, irritating squeaking sound and, in rare cases, can compromise steering precision.

High performance potential and the increased weight typical of electric vehicles can take a heavy toll on the suspension components, subjecting the control arm to enormous stress. Even the bushings can wear sooner under this extreme strain. It’s usually the squeaking sound coming from the upper control arm on the front axle that warns drivers of the damage. Others report a rattling sound coming from the suspension.

“Being able to hold the first prototype of a future HD part in our hand after having identified a weakness, looked into the causes and performed development work and countless tests is a special moment for us every time – especially for a premium car like a Tesla,” Bachmann said. “After all, moments like these are precisely why we do our best every day.”

When it came to re-engineering the MEYLE HD control arm for the Tesla, four key changes resulted in success:

  1. A sturdy control-arm body made from high-strength, forged aluminum improves rigidity and reduces weight compared to the original, which is made from a combination of steel and plastic. Optimized with the finite-element method (FEM), the design also ensures high safety reserves with a low net weight.
  2. The design of the ball joint forgoes the use of crimping, thus eliminating water penetration, preventing standing water and ensuring absolute tightness. The issue of water penetrating the original Tesla control arm is therefore eliminated.
  3. The ball joint itself has a larger diameter than the original part and can distribute forces across a bigger surface, which is essential for a durable spare part, considering the large and frequent loads the high-performance vehicles are exposed to.
  4. The bushings also have been optimized, which also increases service life.

Intensive development goes into each and every MEYLE HD part, which is why the spare-parts specialist provides a four-year guarantee for the HD control arm for the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, just as it does for all its other HD parts.

With its HD range, MEYLE has been launching its own technically enhanced spare parts for 20 years. The company aims to be climate-neutral by 2030. The HD control arm for Tesla is part of a climate-neutral portfolio, which MEYLE will be presenting at Automechanika.

After more than 28 years at the helm, MEYLE AG majority shareholder Karl Gaertner is stepping down from the company’s executive board.
As of Sept. 1, board members Dirk Damaschke and Marc Siemssen are now managing the Hamburg, Germany-based parts manufacturer.
Gaertner is leaving operational management entirely in the experienced hands of his former board colleagues, Damaschke and Siemssen, who have been involved in company management and members of the executive board for several years now.
Gaertner will remain chairman of the executive board of the Wulf Gaertner Autoparts AG holding company, which is wholly owned by the family, and thus continue to support MEYLE with his expertise. The long-term transition is part of a generational change designed to prepare the company for the future.
In addition, Gaertner’s daughter, Lisa Gaertner, has joined the holding company’s supervisory board as a family representative.
“For nearly three decades, I’ve had the opportunity to work with many dedicated colleagues and help transform MEYLE into an internationally successful company that is well known among our customers worldwide for its innovation and quality. And now the time has come for me to pass on the torch,” Karl Gaertner said. “We, the owner family, plan to hand over MEYLE as a successful and internationally competitive company to the next generation. I’m delighted that Lisa Gaertner is assuming a new level of responsibility at the holding company and that we have found just the right team in Dirk Damaschke and Marc Siemssen to continue the brand’s success story.”
Siemssen called Gaertner “a visionary entrepreneur who has transformed MEYLE into the innovative, global company and powerful brand that we are today.”
“We’re assuming responsibility for the company in an exciting era of change that offers both challenges and opportunities for the entire automotive industry,” Siemssen asserted.
Damaschke added: “We’re starting from a strong position and have a wonderful team behind us. We feel like we’re in the best position to advance key issues like electric mobility, sustainability and international growth with full force.”

MEYLE is expanding its product range to include the two-component brake discs for common BMW and Mercedes models.
The new brake discs “offer customers the usual OE qualities such as accurate fit, low offset, reduced weight and the associated fuel savings and decrease in CO2. At the same time, the new brake discs boast high performance, driving comfort and sophisticated design, as is typical of the MEYLE PD line,” the company said.
Thanks to its new products, MEYLE is expanding into the aftermarket for brakes with solutions in areas previously reserved for vehicle manufacturers with their original parts. Seven new references for

Due to the high-quality surface coating, the ECE-R90-certified brake discs do not require degreasing, thus ensuring long-lasting protection against corrosion, according to MEYLE.
A higher percentage of carbon makes the two-component brake discs exceptionally resistant to heat distortion even in cases of higher thermal stress – for example, on steep mountain descents – for extended driving comfort without vibrations, according to the company. To ensure efficient installation at the workshop, 99% of the brake discs are equipped with a fixing screw.

MEYLE recently launched the MEYLE HD control arm for the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.
The new control arm is made of high-strength forged aluminum, and features a redesigned ball joint, larger-diameter ball stud and redeveloped bushings.

As a result, the optimized and reinforced MEYLE HD control arm is specially designed to handle the high stresses of the heavy and powerful Tesla vehicles, according to the company. Backed by a four-year guarantee, the control arm is designed to last longer, provide extended driving safety and deliver “a more fun driving experience.”
“You might remember – there was a lot of frustration in the global Tesla community a while ago,” the company said. “Drivers were reporting a great deal of squeaking and rattling coming from the premium manufacturer’s models.

“Our engineers at MEYLE were on the case right away and identified the Tesla control arm as the source of this nuisance. As always, they analyzed it and put it through an extensive multistage re-engineering process: the MEYLE HD principle. As a result, they developed a completely new technical solution that is now manufactured in our own production facilities.”

Here in the Northeast, we start preparing for winter weather in the early fall. For homeowners, “winter prep” is a chore – servicing snowblowers, buttoning up the house and deck against ice and snow, and arranging for plow services to clear driveways. For others, it’s an opportunity to earn extra seasonal income. Many landscaping and construction companies, repair shop owners and some private individuals operate snowplow services during the “slow months” in their primary fields. Finally, there are snowmobile enthusiasts who actually look forward to the white stuff falling!
When it comes to seasonal merchandising and sales, light-duty snowplow parts represent one of the best returns on investment of any seasonal display. Four to eight feet of gondola space is enough to show off a modest inventory of essential plow parts, lighting and fluids. If salesfloor space is at a premium, prominently advertising that you stock these specialty items can attract enough attention to start a conversation.
Stocking the most popular of these items is critical for realizing maximum sales. Plow operators don’t keep “banker’s hours,” and most of their workday is spent in the dark. Early mornings and late nights mean breakdowns occur when parts stores are closed, and I’ve had many a customer waiting in the parking lot when I arrived, eager to get a hydraulic hose and fluid, a solenoid or coil, so they can get back to plowing their customers’ properties. Downtime means lost revenue, so if you stock it, you’ve sold it!
Plow parts are mainstream enough for many SKUs to be stocked at the warehouse level, so replenishment or non-stock orders can be obtained same day or next day if your warehouse has invested in a stocking inventory. Many independent stores buy plow parts directly from a specialty distributor, so they place a large stock order at the beginning of the season, and special-order slower-moving parts on an as-requested basis. Return terms for these orders may vary, so selecting your stocking inventory carefully is the best way to avoid holding obsolete parts from year-to-year. Fluid, hoses and fittings, motors, solenoids and coils, lights, plow markers, trip springs, pins and shoes are some of the most commonly requested essential items.
Once the roads, parking lots and driveways have been cleared, for many of our customers it’s time to hit the snowmobile trails. Here in upstate New York, snowmobiles are a regular part of our local winter economy, bringing tourist dollars to our communities. Local riders already know you as a reliable source of parts and supplies for their sleds, but out-of-towners might be caught scrambling for a last-minute drive belt, spare spark plugs or injector oil. Your reputation in the community serves you well when these riders make “pit stops,” mingling with the locals and asking for advice.
The extreme temperatures that signal snow season also can be rough on the tow vehicles and trailers that bring snowmobilers to your town. Whether selling them DIY parts at your counter or recommending one of your commercial accounts to perform needed repairs, you’re capturing a part of that tourist dollar.
Parts opportunities for snowmobiles are very similar to other powersport units. Spark plugs, drive belts, lighting, oil and fluids are our best-selling items in this category. Two-stroke sleds had been the industry standard since the 1950s, but four-stroke engines have become an important part of the market over the past 20 years. These engines offer increased reliability and horsepower, less maintenance and lower emissions than the two-strokes of the past. All snowmobiles can offer us spark plug and drive belt sales opportunities, but two- and four-strokes have very different needs when it comes to engine oils. Like other two-stroke equipment, snowmobiles burn a gas-oil mixture. Oils specifically designed for two-stroke snowmobiles feature low-temperature pour points, clean-burning formulas to prevent carbon deposits and fouling, and create less smoke and odor, which is a bonus for the people riding behind you.
Four-stroke sleds have a traditional crankcase/sump design, and use a recirculating motor oil, which also means the opportunity for an oil-filter sale. Recommending oils (and coolant) for four-stroke snowmobiles is very much like navigating today’s automobile-fluids market. Manufacturer-specific approvals and compatibilities need to be considered, and if you don’t have the appropriate product, referring your customer to the local powersports dealer is the best thing you can do for your customer.
If your market warrants the investment, including some of these specialty oils and fluids in your inventory along with other powersport and plow-related SKUs will help to make your store more profitable no matter the weather!
