FRAM and TRICO – part of First Brands Group family of companies – have donated $40,000 to the CAL FIRE Benevolent Foundation to benefit the families of firefighters who are supported by the charitable organization.

The donation was made at the No One Left Behind Spring Tribute Golf Tournament.

First Brands Group Senior Director of Sales Nathan Giles and Director of Sales Erick Esparza were onsite to present CAL FIRE Benevolent Foundation President/CEO Kevin O’Meara with the check on behalf of FRAM and TRICO during the post-tournament reception.

“We are proud to partner with such a remarkable organization,” said Giles. “The impact that the CAL FIRE Benevolent Foundation has on area firefighters and their families cannot be overstated, and we are truly honored to be able to support its lifechanging mission.”

During the presentation of the donation check, O’Meara voiced his gratitude on behalf of the CAL FIRE Benevolent Foundation.

“This generous donation will go a long way in helping our firefighters and their families in their time of need,” he said.

More than 140 golfers participated in the team tournament on May 16 at Half Moon Bay Golf Links. The event was held to benefit firefighters and their families who have suffered a debilitating injury, loss of life, were burned on duty, have an illness or need financial assistance.

The tournament began with a post-registration breakfast before a shotgun start accompanied by CAL FIRE Local 2881’s Honor Guard & Pipes and Drums. The event concluded with a silent auction, awards ceremony, check presentation and reception dinner.

Firefighters from CAL FIRE Local 2881 formed the CAL FIRE Benevolent Foundation to engage in charitable and educational activities in support of the families of firefighters facing financial need. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit also assists burn victims while funding critical research around the occupational hazards facing firefighters.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2024 Byrl Shoemaker/ASE Education Foundation Instructor of the Year. The winner of the Byrl Shoemaker/ASE Education Foundation Instructor of the Year will receive a plaque, an $1,000 award, and an expenses-paid trip for two to attend the ASE Instructor Training Conference held July 15-18 in Minneapolis and ASE’s fall board of directors meeting to be celebrated at the annual technician of the year recognition banquet on Nov. 20 in New Orleans.

He was a major contributor to education, including the development of the system of career technical education programs in Ohio and the development of the two-year post high school technician education centers that have grown into the system of community colleges across Ohio. Dr. Shoemaker was also instrumental in the development of VICA (now SkillsUSA) in Ohio as well as nationally and the development of NATEF (now ASE Education Foundation) accreditation, ensuring entry-level automotive repair training programs meet standards set by the automotive service industry at the national level, according to the ASE Education Foundation.
“There are many individuals within the automotive service education field whose contributions continue to influence and inspire long after they are gone. Such an individual was Byrl Shoemaker, Ph.D.,” said Mike Coley, ASE Education Foundation president. “Few have done as much to advance technician education as Dr. Shoemaker. Each year, the ASE Education Foundation honors his memory with the presentation of an award in his name. It is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement for those outstanding instructors whose work reflects the same dedication to technical education modeled by Dr. Shoemaker.”

The ASE Education Foundation is partnering with auto dealer associations to conduct student automotive competitions designed to increase awareness of career opportunities in the automotive industry.
“The goal of the student competitions is to connect businesses with schools and increase the interest of students, encouraging them to work and stay within the automotive field,” said Mike Coley, ASE Education Foundation president. “The most recent competition was held in December in Texas and was a big success with 40 teams competing and over 700 students participating in a career fair. These types of events are another way the ASE Education Foundation is working to reduce the industry’s technician shortage.”
Three student competitions are currently scheduled for 2024, with more being planned. Competitions are scheduled for March in Charlotte and the fall in Houston.
During the December event at Texas Motor Speedway, 117 high school seniors from ASE accredited training programs competed in the North Texas Automobile Dealers Auto Tech Competition. Dealer technicians were paired with each of the 40 teams for several weeks leading up to the event, which featured students trying to diagnose and repair bugged vehicles where the problems were notated on repair orders.
The competition format is flexible and can be modified for local or organizational needs. Unlike traditional student competitions where school instructors train and prepare students, these competitions are based on a partnership between schools and the local businesses.
The students selected for the competition job-shadow at a local employer’s service facility and prepare for the contest alongside the technicians in the shop. A list of specific skills for the students to experience is provided to each employer.
The goal is to provide real-world experience to the students while exposing them to job opportunities in the local market, the foundation noted.
To learn more about the student competitions, contact George Arrants, vice president of the ASE Education Foundation, at [email protected].
