The three “F”s may sound like a report card we wanted to hide from our parents, but in our industry, they refer to form, fit and function. They are the cornerstones of quality in the aftermarket, and heavily referenced when describing your product offerings. From an engineering standpoint, they are critical considerations when producing an aftermarket component designed to duplicate (or upgrade) an OEM design. Form refers to dimensional and material specifications, and affects the look, feel and even weight of a component. In some enthusiast circles, finish may also be an important consideration. Form is critical for identification, as well as perception of quality. Fit allows a part to be attached to other components or work in harmony with other parts in a subassembly or system. Fine tolerances are often critical to proper fitment between two or more parts, and fit often follows form from a design and engineering standpoint. Function is the ability of the product to perform the intended duties of the original design, and may also include considerations of durability and longevity. In most cases, function is the ultimate goal of a replacement part, with fit and form contributing to this functionality. In many cases, the form, fit and function of an aftermarket part is an exact duplicate of its OEM counterpart. For some components, patent or licensing considerations may prevent an aftermarket provider from creating exact replicas of certain components. When these legal limitations prevent a reputable company from reproducing a design, modifications to the form (which do not affect fit and function) can often allow a manufacturer to produce a suitable replacement. This is not to say that “knockoff” parts are suitable replacements for aftermarket or OEM offerings. The vague or intentionally deceptive origins of gray market and counterfeit parts are a problem for everyone from the supplier to the end user, and undermines the intellectual property rights of both OEM and aftermarket manufacturers. Beauty is only skin deep, and it’s often what you can’t see that makes the difference between a great part and a potential failure. This is most obvious with counterfeit parts, where the form is often the only aspect of the product that matches the original. The use of inferior materials or other cost-cutting measures make reliability and durability a gamble when compared to the genuine article. When it comes to labor-intensive repair parts like a rear main seal, or safety items like brake parts, the fit, form and function are all critical aspects of the manufacturing process. For others, fit and function are enough to get the job done, especially if the form represents an enhancement to the original design, or an upgrade in performance and durability. I recently replaced a window motor on my personal vehicle, using a national aftermarket brand. In addition to the new motor were a half-dozen plug-and-play jumper wire adapters, allowing this single SKU to fit multiple applications. While the form was slightly different than the OEM or another brand’s reman offering, the fit and function were excellent, and that single SKU replaces five other units on my store’s shelving. It was a win for me both professionally and personally! Sometimes, the OEM doesn’t get a design quite right, and the aftermarket sees an opportunity to upgrade a flawed or poorly-conceived part. The increased use of plastics in parts design has led to a few notorious failures. In the late 1990s, we began to see repeated failures of sway bar links on the Ford Taurus. We collectively shook our heads at the OEM plastic design, and replaced them with aftermarket steel links. As these vehicles aged out of the market, it became one of those “remember when?” stories passed to new counterpeople…. until Chrysler inexplicably duplicated the design for its Jeep Renegade and Compass models! The aftermarket came to the rescue once again, and now, even the OEM has upgraded its original plastic links to a steel design. One of the greatest advantages we have over the OEM is our diversity. With hundreds of aftermarket manufacturers creating (or re-creating) replacement parts, the potential for innovation and the sheer number of resources at our disposal gives us more options than those offered by the OEM. Our adaptability and willingness to work outside the confines of an OEM catalog also give us the freedom to find creative or unorthodox solutions to our customers’ problems. Rislone announced its new Rislone® Hy-per Lube® High Mileage Treatment Engine Supplement (p/n 4400), which it said improves oil performance to eliminate dry starts, reduce friction and wear, prevent oil breakdown and extend engine life. “Its concentrated formula delivers legendary Rislone Hy-per Lube performance in a compact, easy-to-use, and shelf-friendly bottle,” the company added. Hy-per Lube Engine Supplement is a premium additive blend formulated to work with all motor oils, including conventional, high-mileage, and synthetic, to make older, high-mileage, and high-performance engines run better and last longer than they would with oil alone, according to Rislone. Automotive Parts Associates announced Parts Universe is the newest member of TruStar. Eaton announced it is now offering Advantage automated series clutch and Cummins flywheel kits for the Eaton-Cummins Endurant automated manual transmission (AMT). The two will be sold in the same kit for the first time, according to Eaton. An Eaton news release announcing the product launch explained that a flywheel, which is the interface between the engine and clutch, is bolted to the engine and spins when in operation. The clutch cover, which is bolted to the flywheel, also spins, and the driven disc of the clutch engages against the flywheel, which over time can cause wear. “Today’s manufacturers recommend that flywheels should be replaced, rather than the previous practice of resurfacing worn flywheels,” said Leandro Girardi, director, aftermarket, Eaton’s Mobility Group. “This ensures the flywheel fits correctly to engage with the clutch, and prevents fault codes, excessive wear and vibrations.” Eaton said its Advantage Automated clutch is the original equipment clutch used in the Endurant transmission. Cloyes announced the release of an expanded range of timing chain kits and components for Q3 2024. The company said this latest product launch provides aftermarket solutions for a broad selection of popular vehicle makes and models. Cloyes said this quarter’s new offerings include comprehensive timing chain kits for Ford and Subaru vehicles. They’re designed to support Ford models such as the F-150, Mustang, Expedition and Transit, with engine sizes ranging from 2.7L to 3.7L. Subaru models, including the Forester, Impreza, Outback, and BRZ, are also covered, with kits tailored for 2.0L and 2.5L engines. Cloyes further expanded its product line with new timing chain kits for Mercedes-Benz and Mazda vehicles. Mercedes-Benz kits are designed for the 2.1L and 2.7L engines found in models such as the E250, GLE300d, and Sprinter vans. For Mazda, owners of vehicles such as the Mazda 3, CX-5, and MX-5 Miata can benefit from Cloyes’ new timing and oil pump chain kits, the company said. Advanced low-voltage battery solutions provider Clarios, announced a strategic investment in Altris, a pioneer in sustainable sodium-ion battery technology, with the aim of manufacturing low-voltage, sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries for the automotive sector. Clarios expects its investment to initially enable Altris to finalize and start pilot production of Na-ion automotive batteries, followed by commercial production beginning in 2026. This equity stake builds on a joint development agreement (JDA) between Clarios, producer of one in three of the world’s low-voltage car batteries, and Altris, a leader in sodium-ion cathode material and battery cell technology, focused on low-voltage Na-ion batteries, according to a news release announcing the strategic investment. Clarios said it will leverage its expertise in Battery Management Systems (BMS), software and system integration to design the Na-ion low-voltage automotive battery system to optimize battery performance. Altris, on the other hand, will focus on developing the sodium-ion cell technology for this low-voltage application. Every vehicle, including hybrid electric and fully electric vehicles, requires a low-voltage energy source to power an increased number of software-based functions such as steer-by-wire, break-by-wire, autonomous functions, and enhanced in cabin experiences. The Clarios low-voltage system architecture, comprising multiple networks and battery power sources, is essential for powering critical safety features and ensuring redundancy in vehicle electrical systems, the company said. Sodium-ion batteries are well suited to meet these increased power demands. At the same time, they are inherently sustainable and easy to recycle. “A sodium-ion battery solution perfectly complements our chemistry-agnostic portfolio, neatly dovetailing with lithium-ion and lead-acid options to capture the best attributes of both: high performance and lower cost,” said Federico Morales-Zimmermann vice president and general manager, global OEM customers and technology at Clarios. “A sodium-ion battery system provides agility for automakers seeking options in meeting intensifying low-voltage demands created by advanced vehicle technologies.” The materials used to produce sodium-ion cells – salt, wood, iron and those found in air – are abundant globally and are free from harmful chemicals or minerals mined in conflict zones. Developing Na-ion batteries for vehicles would represent an important advancement in automotive battery technology, while advancing the auto industry’s circularity goals, Clarios said. “Humans think AI is going to replace them,” says Mike Mohler, executive vice president and chief purchasing officer with the Automotive Parts Service Group. “It won’t. Somebody using AI to be better than you will replace you.” The integration of artificial intelligence in the aftermarket is more advanced than many people might realize, according to Mohler. It’s already yielding impressive results for those who are using it effectively. The primary challenge is not just the availability of data, but the effective use of that data to drive actionable insights and decisions. Mohler cites a report from Accenture showing that AI-driven price optimization can result in a 5% increase in gross margin and a 15% boost in revenue. “You look at some of our competitors, and they’re able to post comparatively outrageous profit margins,” says Mohler. “They’re using AI for logistical prowess. They’re using it for customer service. They’re using it to get the right pricing in play.” The ability to make informed decisions based on comprehensive data analysis is a major advantage of AI. Data scientists in the aftermarket industry are increasingly using the technology to turn large sets of data into actionable insights. This includes identifying market trends, customer preferences and operational inefficiencies. The application of AI in this area can lead to better strategic planning and improved business outcomes. Mohler says those applications can have a significant impact on profitability. “Let’s say the average WD would have a 25-45% gross profit margin, given their business model. Some competitors are posting 58%. AI is going to be the tool to help them catch up. We’ve got to get to 53% minimum, I think. That’s a rarefied position, but it’s been tested by some of the smartest people that I know, and it should be achievable when we’re planning and we’re hoping that it is,” Mohler explains. A Customer Experience Revolution AI’s application extends to customer service as well. Chatbots and virtual assistants are now commonplace, offering customers quick and efficient service. These AI-driven tools have evolved to the point where they can engage in conversations that are increasingly indistinguishable from human interaction. “I wonder how many people know that they’re talking to a chatbot when they’re talking to a chatbot?,” asks Mohler. Navigating the Risks Despite its advantages, AI’s integration into the aftermarket raises several concerns. Cybersecurity is one of them, as increased reliance on data systems introduces new vulnerabilities. “We have employees with access to the internet at a thumb’s notice, and if we’re not careful, they can mistakenly click on something that could disrupt our business for months,” Mohler explains. Mohler also expresses concerns about protecting intellectual property. Misuse of data or inadequate protection against competitive eavesdropping could undermine trust and impact the industry’s integrity. “Once the data hits the public domain, how do we protect it and how do we make sure that it’s not being used against us? How do we know that we’re not enabling our competitor who’s able to electronically eavesdrop on one another like never before?,” asks Mohler. Envisioning AI’s Next Steps Mohler stresses that AI’s influence on the aftermarket is only in its infancy. Over the next 5-10 years, he envisions an advancement from a basic understanding of AI as an algorithmic tool to more specialized applications tailored to industry-specific needs. “So my thought would be that companies would have their own internalized GPTs and industries would have their own internalized GPTs. My hope is also that we will become as skilled at selling to disembodied customers via e-commerce as we are at selling to them when they’re across the counter from us or in our stores,” Mohler says. Mohler references the seven stages of AI when looking ahead to the technology’s impact on the aftermarket. “When it comes to supply chain, when it comes to logistically moving products around, when it comes to optimizing sale price, optimizing customer service, my hope is that we will be a little closer to stage seven. Right now, we’re really at stage one and a half, maybe two,” says Mohler. As the technology evolves, moving beyond its current capabilities, AI’s exact impact on the aftermarket, and countless other industries, will be even more profound. Companies that invest in AI and adapt to its changes will be well-positioned to thrive in the future of the automotive aftermarket. “It’s incumbent upon us to understand AI and to become data scientists ourselves, because everybody’s got access to the data. Whoever can use the most disparate sources for the best outcomes is going to win in my overall view of it,” says Mohler. ShowMeTheParts announced the release of a new mobile app, described by the company as a “complete overhaul designed to embrace the AI tools of the future.” Features like year/make/model lookup and application lookup, remain on the app, but the company said that information will be available with an updated interface that’s smoother, more stable, and more intuitive. The company launched its first mobile apps for auto parts catalog lookup over 15 years ago. Since then, ShowMeTheParts made consistent tweaks and updates to its original mobile app technology. Saying that incremental updates are no longer enough to stay ahead of the curve, the company released a new app, built on what it calls a “cutting-edge technology platform.” ShowMeTheParts adds that the updated app is about more than just aesthetics. Driven Distribution, LLC, a warehouse distributor of automotive aftermarket hard parts, consumables and accessories backed by HCI Equity Partners, announced that it has acquired the auto parts and accessories distribution business of Chicago Parts & Sound. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. This marks the second transaction in the Driven Distribution platform, following the recapitalization of Tri-State Enterprises, Inc. in November 2023. Based in Elk Grove Village, IL, with additional locations in Illinois and Wisconsin, Chicago Parts & Sound is a warehouse distributor focused on automotive aftermarket parts, batteries, consumables and accessories. The Company serves auto dealerships, independent repair shops, municipalities, governments and company fleets. Chicago Parts & Sound was founded in 1978 and acquired by Bob and Jackie Lederer in 2002. Since then, CPS has had a tremendous track record of success by providing value-added products and services to its clients, in addition to completing several acquisitions, according to a news release announcing the acquisition. Bob and Jackie said they are reinvesting in the Driven Distribution platform as part of the transaction and will continue to own and operate Police Department Systems (police and emergency vehicle upfitting services) and Coachcraft & Precision Services (specialty auto restoration services). The Automotive Parts Services Group (The Group) announced that Jeff Koviak will assume the role of CEO effective January 1, 2025, replacing retiring CEO Larry Pavey. While constant velocity (CV) joints are the most popular type of driveline joint in use today, universal or “U” joints are still in use on the driveshaft of many larger SUVs, trucks and vans. U-joints can handle a lot of torque, making them popular for these applications, but why did the CV joint rise in popularity? The question can be answered by looking at the operational aspects of a U-joint. The basics are this: U-joints are located on the ends of a driveshaft, mounted between the driveshaft and a front and rear yoke. The front yoke attaches to the transmission and the rear yoke attaches to rear differential. As the engine moves from the effects of torque and as the suspension of a vehicle travels up and down, the angle of the driveshaft changes. A U-joint does two things. First, it transfers the motion between the yoke(s) and driveshaft and, second, it does this at different angles, allowing for driveline movement. Here’s where the fun begins. When a yoke and the driveshaft are in perfect alignment, the velocity from one is transferred to the other at the same rate. However, when there is an angle between the two, the velocity of the driven member fluctuates continuously during rotation. It can be hard to visualize, but the reason this happens is that as the angle of the U-joint changes, the two halves of the U-joint cross are forced to rotate on a different axis. The drive axis remains at a constant velocity, and the ends of the U-joint connected to it rotate in a consistent circular path at the same velocity. The driven axis, however, rotates in a path which causes the distance of travel at the outer ends of the U-joint cross to increase or decrease in relation to the consistent points of the drive axis. This effect results in the continuous fluctuation of velocity between the input and output sides of the U-joint. While the input remains at a consistent speed, the output speeds up and slows down as the points of the driven axis continuously alter between a long and short path of travel. So, why don’t we feel that on a vehicle with a traditional driveshaft? Because there are two U-joints and the fluctuation on each end balances out, effectively allowing the driveshaft to provide a consistent output speed to the rear differential. The angle of the two joints must be the same, however, and it doesn’t take much wear in one for the angles to differ, and subsequently cause a vibration. U-joints are known for their propensity to cause vibration, and an inherent disadvantage they have is the greater the angle of the U-joint, the greater the fluctuation in velocity. Anything over 30 degrees and the fluctuation dramatically increases. The driveshaft I’ve described here represents the majority, but U-joints have also been used frequently in the past on the end of the front axles for a 4WD vehicle, and in the rear of independent rear suspension vehicles on the ends of short driveshafts, known as half-shafts. Have you ever noticed how jittery an old 4WD truck feels in the front when the hubs are locked, and you turn a corner? Now that you understand how the fluctuation in velocity of a U-joint changes as the angle increases, you know why. You may have heard of a Double-Cardan U-joint. It is basically two joints side-by side with a common link-yoke in between. This is one of the original concepts for a true CV joint, and they are often referred to as this. The advantage they have is they offer smoother operation at greater angles, and they are common on 4WD trucks, and a common upgrade for lifted trucks where the driveshaft angle is altered considerably. The drawback to a Double-Cardan joint is they are bulky, and they can still suffer from limitations due to operating angle. The operating limitations of a U-joint ultimately brought about the popularity of the modern CV joint, but the durability of U-joints means we’ll still be seeing them in certain applications. The key to brake system longevity is maintenance. Many vehicle owners don’t realize their brakes should be serviced on a regular basis and there are two primary procedures: maintenance at the wheel and brake fluid changes. As a counter-professional, you can capitalize on selling brake service essentials, and, in addition, proper maintenance will reduce warranty claims caused by lack of this often-forgotten service. Disc brakes require the most maintenance because they are completely exposed to the elements. Even if you don’t notice it, rust and corrosion slowly begin to build up and restrict the movement of the brake pads. Most brake systems today utilize floating calipers that are mounted and move freely on slide pins, and the pads rest on the caliper bracket. On fixed-caliper applications, the calipers do not move, and the pads are supported by the caliper itself, as well as pad retention pins. Either way, the pads must be able to move freely, allowing them to wear evenly. In the case of slide-pin calipers, the calipers must be able to slide freely on the pins. Restricted movement of either the pads or caliper causes uneven and accelerated pad wear and can cause a low brake pedal and reduced brake effectiveness. With normal brake wear and use, it’s not uncommon for the pads to become restricted in as little as six months or 7,000-10,000 miles. Proper maintenance includes removing the caliper, cleaning all pad contact surfaces and slides, cleaning and lubricating caliper slides and replacing any worn boots or pad clips. Drum brakes have similar maintenance requirements. Since they are enclosed by the drum, they are not as affected by the elements and can go longer in between service, but they shouldn’t be overlooked. The drums should be removed for inspection at minimum once a year. The brake shoes rest on the backing plates at two or three contact points, and over time these contact points can build up with rust and corrosion and restrict the movement of the shoes. In addition, brake shoe adjusters should be inspected to make sure they are clean and operating freely, and all the self-adjusting and parking brake components should be inspected. The wheel cylinders, which are the hydraulic component of drum brakes, are hidden from view, and with the drum removed, they can be inspected for leaks and operation. Brake life depends on many factors, and driving habits can be a huge contributor, but maintenance is one of the biggest factors. Even the highest quality brake pads or shoes can be destroyed in a short period of time due to lack of maintenance. When maintenance is ignored on disc brakes, the pads begin to wear unevenly, and frequently one may even get stuck, creating uneven braking between the inboard and outboard pads. In addition, this will accelerate wear on the rotors, affect fuel economy and build excess heat in the brake calipers, which can shorten their lifespan. The majority of premature or incorrect brake wear is the result of poor maintenance. It may seem like a lot of work to perform regular brake service, but it has an advantage in addition to extending the life of the brakes. When regular brake maintenance is performed, it becomes very easy, only requiring light cleaning and lubrication. The longer the time in between maintenance, the more difficult it gets. Brake fluid should be flushed at least every two years. Over time, brake fluid absorbs moisture and becomes extremely corrosive. Not only does this degrade the performance of the brakes, but it slowly begins to deteriorate the hydraulic components of the system including the master cylinder, ABS components, calipers, wheel cylinders and hoses. Flushing brake fluid will drastically extend the life of these components. Brake maintenance supplies consist of brake cleaner, brake lubricant, hardware kits, brake fluid, a drain pan, shop rags and protective gloves. Overall, it’s time and money well spent, and perhaps the most important factor is the increased safety benefit of keeping brakes in top operating condition. Electric power steering systems have gained widespread popularity in the U.S. since their introduction in 1990, primarily due to the increasing number of hybrid and electric vehicles in today’s market. Like any new(er) technology, each manufacturer has a slightly different method of achieving the same goal, in this case effortless power steering assist, and some are better suited than others for certain applications. The first (but never fully-realized in production) was an electro-hydraulic system intended for the 1989 Pontiac Fiero. When GM decided that 1988 would be the last year for the Fiero, the system was shelved for later use in its short-lived EV-1 battery electric vehicle. Electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) is itself a sort of hybrid, with an electric motor-driven hydraulic pump replacing the belt-driven unit common to “traditional” power steering systems, but retaining the familiar hydraulic rack and pinion assembly, the associated hoses and hard lines, and often a system-specific hydraulic fluid. Found across a wide variety of marques, EHPS remains relevant today as we find ourselves transitioning between ICE, hybrid and BEV technologies. Fully-electric power steering systems use DC motors rather than hydraulic pressure to provide the assistive force required to turn the wheels. Electric motors are long-wearing and quiet, eliminating the squeals and groans common to hydraulic systems, and the power losses associated with belt-driven accessories. These features make them an ideal choice for luxury cars as well as those quiet-running BEVs and hybrids. When compared to hydraulic systems, EPS also represents a weight reduction, adding to vehicle efficiency. Current EPS designs fall into three general categories, based upon the location of the assist motor(s). C-EPS, or “column assist” systems are commonly found in compact vehicles. The motor, sensors and other electronics are integrated into the upper steering column assembly. This location maximizes underhood space, with the bulk of the assembly hidden below the dashboard, and still allows for integration with ADAS features like self-parking, lane assist, handsfree and self-driving technologies. This system is the only one of the three EPS designs that does not attach to or integrate with the rack and pinion. With no plumbing or wiring, the C-EPS rack unit is effectively a manual steering gear. R-EPS, also known as “rack assist” systems feature assist motors integrated into or attached in parallel to the rack body. A recirculating ball gear and toothed rubber belt convert the assist motor’s rotation into a linear (side-to side) motion. Capable of high applied force, this “parallel axis” design is used primarily in light trucks, SUVs and other vehicles where extra steering effort is required. The rubber belt is a common failure point for this type of rack, but repair kits are widely available for many domestic applications, and offer substantial savings when compared to the cost of a complete steering gear. The last category is the “pinion-assist” or P-EPS system. Single-pinion designs locate a relatively large assist motor at the lower end of the steering column, and force is applied directly to the pinion gear at the input shaft. Due to space and safety considerations, many manufacturers have eliminated this system in favor of a dual-pinion setup. The input pinion gear connects to the column, but the assist motor drives a second pinion gear at the opposite end of the rack, isolating the motor from the column, and resulting in improved steering feel. Limited mostly to mid-size cars, P-EPS is not powerful enough for use in heavy vehicles and most light trucks. Vehicle electrification will continue to drive future EPS technologies, but existing ICE vehicles have already proven the advantages of these systems across multiple platforms. The progression from manual to hydraulic to electric power steering systems leaves us on the verge of the next technology, known as “steer by wire.” Just as “throttle by wire” has largely replaced the accelerator cable with a pedal position sensor, engineers are removing the physical linkage between the steering wheel and the steering gear. Steering angle sensors, torque sensors and vehicle speed sensors contribute information to the steering module, which determines the amount of assist required under different driving conditions. This data is sent to actuators in the rack unit that perform the commanded steering functions. Once the realm of science fiction, SBW can now be found in the Infiniti Q60, the Lexus RZ and the Tesla Cybertruck.
