  1. When selecting parts for a car repair, it pays to know the differences between original and aftermarket parts. Whenever possible, get estimates for both. Choosing between original and aftermarket car parts — and even used parts of either type — is all about squaring your priorities with your budget. You’ll have different options depending on the part and the shop. And the best choice will depend on whether you’re trying to keep repairs cheap, restore your car’s appearance after a wreck or soup up your ride. » SIGN UP: Find savings on your car expenses Before we get into that, here are the key differences: Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts match those that came with your car, and are of the same quality as its original parts. They’re also the most expensive. Aftermarket parts are cheaper, and made by other manufacturers — often several, giving you more options. Used parts may have a bit of wear and tear, but should be inspected or rebuilt to ensure they’ll work. These are the cheapest option. Choosing between aftermarket and OEM parts Your decision will depend on the type of repair and the quality and price of the parts. Always look for parts that come with a warranty, even if they’re OEM, so you’ll be protected in case they fail. Auto body repairs Some aftermarket parts may be OK for auto body repair, but others won’t be as good, says Michael Calkins, manager of technical services at AAA. “There’s a lot of variation in quality.” For example, he says, aftermarket parts often don’t have the same level of rustproofing as original parts, fit and finish don’t match, or panels don’t align properly. If OEM parts are used in auto body repair, the car should look and work exactly as it did before the damage, because everything will match up. OEM parts are also crash-tested, unlike many aftermarket parts. Aftermarket parts come at varying price points and levels of quality, but because they are cheaper, insurance companies often prefer them. If you want OEM parts but are dealing with an insurer that wants the shop to use aftermarket parts, ask to pay the difference. “There’s also the option of used parts, depending on the age of the vehicle,” Calkins says. “It may be cheaper than an aftermarket part but still have all of the original quality.” Mechanical repairs A used part, whether it’s OEM or aftermarket, can really save money on repairs under the hood, so long as it’s inspected first and warrantied. And some aftermarket companies reverse-engineer their products to be even better than OEM versions. For example, many car buffs will tell you that you can get heavy-duty shocks and struts or brake pads that are made of stronger materials. Scan some reviews online, or talk with your mechanic if you’re not sure whether an aftermarket part could be an upgrade. Adding some extras If you’d like to modify your ride by adding something like a backup camera or back-seat TV screen, you’ll probably be looking for aftermarket parts. Certain aftermarket upgrades could increase your car’s resale value. This is especially true for improvements like a better sound system or alloy wheels, rather than mechanical repairs. Who provides OEM or aftermarket parts? The options you’ll have for parts depends on the nature of the repairs and what type of shop you take your car to: Dealership repair shops will offer only OEM parts — they have no reason to offer a cheaper product from a competitor Independent mechanics may be able to offer you a choice between OEM and aftermarket parts Independent garages that specialize in your type of vehicle will likely have both, but with quicker access to OEM parts, including used OEM parts, which can really save you Auto body shops can offer both, but if your collision repair is part of an insurance claim, the insurer will likely prefer aftermarket parts to save money Depending on the job, the cost of OEM versus aftermarket parts varies. Whenever you’re given the choice, ask to see estimates for both so you can weigh your options. Source: https://www.nerdwallet.com/blog/loans/auto-loans/oem-vs-aftermarket-parts-car-choose/

  4. Teddy, Thanks for your input. I understand and agree with most or your reply. The whole point though, is quality. Otherwise what are you buying? Most of the troublesome parts were made in china. I am more familiar with china made products than I'd like to be. Fact is china is actually ruining the world base product supply. When you take a close look at a china mfgd part, you first find that the metal structure is either castings with small to large holes, covered up with a grey putty, or pressed steel parts where the metal is contaminated causing weak spots and corrosion. You also find parts inside that do not really fit, such as springs that are too long, insulating washers too thin, fastener threads incorrect, and rough mating / moving parts. Then you find dirty solders, missing solders, solder tabs too small for the pc board, and wiring attached to terminals with solder only. On top of that a reliable parts supply for repair of china made products does not exist. The point is that a person or garage cannot even do preventative work without serious risk. It's become better to keep a rusty, corroded part till it dies. China has taken manufacturing to a new all time low, and napa is buying those parts and representing them as quality with both advertising and cost. Car parts that are unreliable is a serious problem for the world.

But in the American auto market they have used similar strategies to carve out dominant, cash-gushing positions in the industry’s two most lucrative segments: luxury vehicles and large pickup trucks. Both automakers, industry insiders say, have sliced the market so finely with so many different models that few will dare challenge their supremacy. Click Here to read more!

  10. Source: http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/fake-auto-parts-and-road-safety/ ANY legitimate car nut would tell us not to scrimp on automotive parts, especially counterfeit ones, since the “savings wouldn’t be worth the headache”. Lately, there is clamor within the domestic auto-parts industry about the proliferation of fakes being sold by unscrupulous auto supply shops. Most are imported from abroad and costs only a fraction of original parts but bear very identical packaging. Current available data from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) tallies 7,690,038 registered vehicles across the country, bulk of which are in National Capital Region. Even a third of that figure would be a very lucrative market for fake parts. Fakes are not to be confused with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. OEM parts undergo the same rigid quality and performance testing standard procedures as original ones. Besides, some of a vehicle’s components are actually made by separate OEM companies as contractors to huge car manufacturers, like Toyota, Mercedes Benz, BMW, or Honda. Examples of top 100 global OEM companies are JTEKT Corp., Bosch GmbH, Denso Corp., Yazaki Corp., BASF SE and NTN Corp. Independent bogus manufacturers may counterfeit both original and OEM parts. Recently, auto enthusiast and veteran journalist Rey Langit hosted auto parts advocate lawyer Noven Joseph Quioc in one of his programs. Lawer Quioc said the Philippines unfortunately lacks facilities for accident and fatality analysis, such as those in developed countries like the US, making efforts to understand the cause of accidents difficult. Quioc said fake auto parts are not treated at the same level as spurious drugs or food items since they don’t seem to have an immediate lethal or health impact. Langit said it is quite alarming that some of the most commonly counterfeited parts are directly related to passenger safety than cosmetic value. Examples are mag wheels, tires, bearings, brake discs, brake pads, rubber rings, axle boots, oil filters and under chassis components, such as tie rods, rack ends and ball joints. In most cases, consumers are unaware that they are buying a fake part since the packaging of counterfeits is almost like that of original products. There are times that a consumer would consciously prefer a fake auto part for the fraction of a cost in order to save. That’s why many car enthusiasts suggest to only purchase parts from reliable and reputable auto supply shops. These shops usually have posters or flyers that show comparisons of packaging and product quality of parts in order to help consumers identify if what they are buying is fake. More often that not, fake products have misspellings, grammatical errors or design inconsistencies, such as misaligned texts or inaccurate colors in the packaging. The quality of the boxes and hologram/security stickers are of substandard quality. Some parts are also plastic-sealed to avoid tampering. “Fake car parts compromise the safety of everyone in the vehicle. For instance, buying fake rims, tires or brakes may not seem much, but many thrifty car owners forget to understand that these parts keep direct contact with the road. Should these parts fail, the accident will most likely be catastrophic, if not cause of traffic,” said Jose Nicolas Calanoc, deputy editor of C! Magazine. “Those who are buying fake automotive parts should ask themselves: are their and their passenger’s lives worth that amount they get to save?” he said. Arnel Doria, president of Safety Riders Association of the Philippines and Safe-T Ryders Training Center, said in a recent news conference that the menace of fake auto parts is not just restricted to loss of life but translates into a loss of revenue for an industry, as well. It also means less taxes and revenues for the government because the firms that make these fake parts do not pay taxes. Worse, many of these fake parts are smuggled into the country. That’s why international and local auto parts makers are coordinating with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to raid and seize these items. The law-enforcement agency has been at it for almost two decades now, following complaints. Once caught, importers, distributors and retailers of fake parts will be charged in violation of the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines. Recently, the National Bureau of Investigation conducted simultaneous raids in Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, Davao and Tagum, resulting in a rich haul of fake automotive parts. Again, would you rather risk your life and your loved ones for a fraction of a price? To reach the writer, e-mail [email protected].

  15. Here's my story.....I ordered a front wheel bearing for my 2007 Mini Cooper S and installed the part. For some reason I kept my old bearing and the original box the new one came in (glad I did). You have 30 days to return it if its the wrong part or defective. After that it falls on the manufacturer's warranty ( in this case it was 12 months from the received date.) I actually ordered a second one thinking I should replace both.....so I ordered the exact same thing again. The part showed up ... the box had the right part number but what was inside was some other part???? So I sent that back and didn't order another one. I don't drive the car in the winter and so it had low miles on the first new bearing but the bearing didn't last and was worn out in less than 12 months (poor quality I guess or just defective). I was able to send it back to rock auto for a warranty replacement I just had to pay the shipping.... ah ok.... I installed the new one and in a couple of long road trips it was grinding already. I assumed I had 12 months from when I received the new replacement. WRONG ..... the warranty is only good for 12 months from when you received the original one??? What !!!! They would not replace the second defective wheel bearing.... SOL..... BEWARE .... small light car ...how could that hurt a wheel bearing???? it must be poor quality parts .... and will not back you up .... never shopping with them again.

  20. Joe Pagone….based on past experiences with you, I find it hard to take you seriously. Perhaps you are still living in the past and cannot catch up with the reality of how the world works now. Or, maybe you are just being yourself, a cranky constant complainer. In any case, I find it hard to believe that the Washington store treated you so badly. If this were true, I doubt highly that this particular store would remain in business as this would be happening to all customers. If you don't like how they treated you, you are free to conduct business elsewhere. But knowing you as I do, I'm sure you will find fault with everyone you do business with. Vote for Trump in 2020 and let him bring back more manufacturing to America and then maybe you will be happy with the quality. OOps, I forgot......you don't vote.

  22. There are many advantages for precision machining, the most obvious part is it can reach to high precision that the normal way can’t do. Precision also depends on precision processing equipment and accurate control system, and use the precision mask as an intermediary, to achieve small control for precision by removal or addition.so what specific characteristics for precision machining? Let engineer from Kanou Precision introduce the details now: 一,Precision parts cutting processing There are mainly precision turning, mirror grinding and grinding. By using single crystal diamond turning tool with a fine grinding to do micro-turning, and the thickness can be around 0.01mm, It often is used to machine high precision and high polishing parts that is non-ferrous metal materials with Spherical surface, aspheric surface, surface. 二,Precision Parts Machining When the precision machining use nm, even use 0.1nm as the target, The Cutting processing can’t meet the requirements, then we need use special machining method like Application of chemical, electrochemical, thermal or electrical energy, etc, to achieve the High Precision requirements. These processes include mechanochemical polishing, ion sputtering, and ion implantation, electron beam exposure, laser beam processing, metal evaporation, molecular beam epitaxy, etc. For the introduction about precision machining to you is here, You can visit our website:kanouprecision.com to know more news about us. Kanou specializes in the production of quality machined parts, precision turned parts, offering professional machining services at a competitive price and on timely delivery. 26. Rubber bushing is mainly used in the position of automobile front and rear suspension and other frequent vibration. It plays a vital role in the whole vehicle NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness), and it will be invalid and will affect the whole vehicle noise and driving stability. The failure mode of rubber bushing is not only its own quality control, but also its working environment is one of the key factors affecting its life. Thanks for the support of the Feilong Jiangli technical department. Automobile suspension is a component that connects the frame (or body) with the axle (or direct and wheel). Its main functions are: D mitigates and inhibits vibration or shock caused by uneven pavement to ensure the car has good smoothness; 2 (2) rapidly attenuates the vibration of the body and axle (or wheel); 3 (3) transfer function in the wheel and frame (car) Various forces (vertical force, longitudinal force, transverse force) and moments (braking moment and reaction moment) between the body; 4) to ensure the necessary stability of the vehicle.

  27. 2.ACM is a copolymer of ethyl lactone with 2-chloroethyl ethyl or butylene propionate with acrylonitrile. The former is called ACM and the latter is called ANM. At present, the global production and sales are about more than 100 thousand tons, more than 80% are used in automobile rubber products, so it is also called automobile rubber. The 3%~5%ACM of automobile rubber is a saturated type rubber. In order to make it cross linking, it usually adds third monomers of monomer which can provide vulcanization points during polymerization, forming active chlorine, epoxy, basic type and diene. Type (ENB) and other types. The earliest production of ACM was the ancient total Lich chemistry, which was later extended to Japanese oil seals, Rui, JSR and so on. There were 10 kinds of cars sold in Japan and more than 30 kinds of commodity brands with standard type (AR31, 51), heat resistant (AR100, 110), cold type (AR210, 200), and super cold and easy additive (4052EP, 4053EP) and so on, to choose A according to specific use. The pre oil property of CM is equivalent to NBR, and the heat resistance is better than NBR. The long-term use is 170 C, and the short term can reach 210 "C. the automobile seal can drive 15~20 million km, about 1.5~2.0 times of NBR, especially in the automobile oil seal. Now, the use of 2/3 is to eliminate the oil seal. Therefore, we often call it the car oil seal. The biggest drawback of automobile oil seal rubber ACM is poor cold resistance, far less than NBR. The heat resistance of ACM is only -15 C, and the standard type is only -20 C. However, in recent years, after continuous improvement, it has been able to reach -30 C and super cold resistance type can even reach -40 C. Another disadvantage is poor workability, mixing, calendering and extrusion. Besides the alkene type ACM, it can not be vulcanized vulcanized like ordinary rubber, and some even undergo two times of vulcanization. However, due to the low price of FKM, which is far more than heat resistant oil, it is still being ignored as the above disadvantages of improving ACM. In recent years, there has been a AEM called ethylene methyl acrylate rubber, with DuPont's Vamac. It is a three - copolymer of ethylene, methyl acrylate and organic carboxylic acid. It is not only good in oil resistance, but also high in elongation of rubber after oil immersion. It is also used to produce power steering gum, high hysteresis plug protection sleeve and automatic bellows. In addition, there are also acrylic rubber, 1F4[(1,1 two hydrogen containing butyl acrylic acid) 2F4[poly (3- Perfluoromethoxy -1,1- two hydrogen fluoride acrylate)) and other products, and is developed by the 3M company. Because of their 50% fluorine content, they are also regarded as the first rubber, the low heat resistance is higher than ACM, the oil resistance is better than the NBR, the low temperature resistance and flexion resistance of 2F4 are better than 1F4. In recent years, it has been expanded to the vehicle in the military fields such as rockets and aircraft.China's production of ACM, the standard level of Jilin oil chemical Super AR-01, AR-03, Suining Qinglong AR-100, AR-200; cold class SuperAR-02, AR-04, AR-300, AR-400. Thanks for the help of the Chongqing Feilong Jiangli Auto Parts’ Technical dept. And welcome to share the idea with us ([email protected]). Thanks https://s1.ax1x.com/2018/07/21/P8cDzV.jpg

  28. Ford is recalling about 550,000 cars and SUVs in North America to fix a gearshift problem that could cause the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly. The recall covers certain 2013 through 2016 Fusion sedans and some 2013 and 2014 Escape small SUVs. Ford says a bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission can fall off. If this happens, the driver could shift into park but the vehicle could be in another gear. That could let the vehicle roll, increasing the risk of injury or crash. The company says it doesn't know of any crashes or injuries. Ford is advising owners to use the parking brake. Dealers will replace the shifter bushing at no cost. Owners will be notified by July 30. Parts should be available late this quarter.

  32. It’s in every American’s blood to achieve more, do better, strive. (Well, most Americans. Everyone has that one cousin who doesn’t do a whole lot.) But in this hyper-aware, hyper-competitive world in which we live, I’d like everyone to do one, huge thing: less. Of everything. What? Yes, that’s right, less. You know that phrase you often hear when meeting new people and exchanging business cards, “I’m a jack of all trades, master of none?” That’s not a good thing. And I’m not sure why we hear it so much. I think it’s meant as a badge of honor. Or maybe it’s meant to be a sign of humility. But that person needs to listen to his or her own words and act on them. I don’t care how big your business is. Everyone is trying to do too much, be too much to too many other people and businesses. The signs are everywhere: Too few employees trying to do more and more complex tasks; companies offering myriad services, many of which seem impossible to accomplish them all well; half-completed projects; people chasing their tails, going after the shiny new ball of aluminum foil. What’s the result? Are your sales down? Do you feel like you’ve thrown everything you can at the wall and nothing is sticking? If so, I’m pretty sure it’s not the market: It’s you. Stop it. Stop trying to be everything, and watch your sales improve. Let’s get back to our customers and give them what they want and need. What’s the best way to do that? Listen to them. It isn’t any harder than that. The future is not in a web page, an app or an algorithm. Success is rooted in connecting with people, discovering their needs and providing them the products and services they need to do their business. It’s as simple as that. 34. One of the best money-saving products that’s ever been invented is cooling system sealer. Most products will successfully seal minor coolant leaks to stop the loss of coolant that leads to engine overheating. Specially formulated “head gasket” sealers also can stop many head gasket leaks and save your customer thousands of dollars in expensive engine repairs. What’s more, coolant sealers also can be added to the coolant as a preventive measure to plug small leaks before they turn into big ones. Coolant leaks can occur anywhere in the cooling system, including the water pump, hoses, radiator, heater core, thermostat housing, expansion plugs, head gasket, combustion chamber or cylinder block. Regardless of where a leak occurs, the end result is always the same: coolant loss that sooner or later allows the engine to overheat. Overheating is bad news because excessive heat causes metal to expand beyond normal limits and clearances. The result can be piston scuffing, cylinder scoring, valve sticking, damaged valve guides and even warped cylinder heads. Overheating also can crush an otherwise good head gasket, causing the gasket to leak when the radiator is refilled with coolant. Most cooling system sealers can seal small pinhole leaks in radiators and heater cores as well as hairline cracks where the core and end tanks are joined, and porosity leaks in aluminum cylinder heads and blocks. Products designed to seal more serious leaks also can delay or even eliminate the need to replace a head gasket or heater core (both of which are expensive labor-intensive repair jobs). Stopping a water pump shaft seal leak, however, or a large leak in a hose is beyond the capabilities of most products. The key to selling cooling system sealers is to match the product with the leak your customer is trying to stop. And the keys to a successful repair are choosing the right product and then following the directions on the label. Step one is to figure out what’s leaking. Is it the radiator, heater core, water pump or a bad hose? Head gasket leaks are harder to diagnose because leaks are usually internal rather then external. A mysterious loss of coolant with no puddles under the vehicle or obvious signs of leakage under the hood often indicates a leaking head gasket, or in some cases a leaky radiator pressure cap. A head gasket leak can be confirmed by pressure-testing the cooling system, using a chemical test strip that detects the presence of combustion gases in the coolant, or by checking the dipstick for signs of coolant in the oil (yellowish gunk on the dipstick). Radiator caps also can be pressure-tested to see if the cap holds its rated pressure. If it can’t, replace the cap. Sometimes, leaky hose connections can be fixed by simply tightening or replacing the clamp. But if a hose is dripping or spraying coolant, replacing the hose is the recommended repair. Same for a leaky water pump. If a leak is something that a coolant sealer has a good chance of stopping, select a product that is formulated for that type of leak (read the label). Tell your customer to follow the directions for how the product should be used and what, if any, additional steps are recommended to ensure a successful seal. In most cases, the sealer is added to the radiator or coolant reservoir. Makeup coolant then is added and the engine is started so the sealer and coolant can circulate until the leak stops. Additional coolant may be required after the engine has reached operating temperature and cooled back down. Caution: Customers should be warned to NEVER open a radiator cap on a hot engine. Steam can blow out and cause serious burns. Wait until the engine has cooled before opening the cap. Source: http://www.counterman.com/coolant-sealers-can-help-vehicle-owners-save-money/

  37. “Tommy Boy,” starring David Spade and Chris Farley, is the ultimate movie about automotive parts. In fact, it might be the only movie in which auto parts play a fundamental role in the story. While Tommy Callahan (Farley) and Richard Hayden (Spade) aren’t counter professionals, their cross-country journey in the 1995 film can serve as a valuable resource to anyone who sells auto parts for a living. These clips can teach you what to do – well, mostly what NOT to do – when trying to make a sale. 1. Don’t take “no” for an answer. 2. Guarantees are meaningless. 3. Relax – and be yourself. 4. Don’t try to be too clever. 5. Don’t set anything on fire. Source: http://www.counterman.com/sell-auto-parts-lessons-tommy-boy/

  43. The earnings came out today and the stock dropped... Barron's article: http://www.barrons.com/articles/advance-auto-parts-what-just-happened-1502806791 A big earnings missed combined with disappointing guidance have caused shares of Advance Auto Parts to lose a fifth of their value this morning. By Ben Levisohn Aug. 15, 2017 10:19 a.m. ET Advance Auto Parts (AAP) was trying to get its engine started heading into its earnings report this morning. Instead, it's stalled once again. Advance Auto Parts had gained 7% during the past month at the close of trading. but then it released its second-quarter financial results. Advance reported a profit of $1.58 a share, missing forecasts for $1.65, on sales of $2.26 billion, in-line with analyst expectations. And while its same-store sales were flat--beating expectations for a 0.2% second-quarter decline--Advance now expects comparable-store sales to drop between 1% and 3% this year, below expectations for a 0.5% decline. Guggenheim's Steven Forbes and team explain why they "remain on the sidelines" following Advance's results: Now, shares of Advance Auto Parts are in freefall--and taking its competitors with it. Shares of Advance have plunged 20% to $87.19 at 10:02 a.m. today, while O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY) has fallen 2.9% to $192.70, and AutoZone (AZO) has dropped 3.7% to $505.93.

  44. here are a number of things that could be causing this p0420 catalyst efficiency code. The most common thing is the catalytic converter itself is no longer functioning properly. The other likely thing is the rear O2 (oxygen) sensor is no longer working properly. Other things could include exhaust leaks, damaged exhaust pipes, damaged O2 sensor wiring/connectors, plugged catalytic converter, etc. The easiest thing to do first is a visual check of things. Visually inspect the exhaust system for leaks, check the catalytic converter for dents, holes, severe discoloration, and check for a rattle inside. If any of those syptoms are there, the converter likely needs replacement. Then, visually inspect the downstream O2 sensor (behind the converter). Check for broken wires, obvious faults, etc. If all that checks out, you'll want to check the operation of the O2 sensor. To do that, you'll need access to a scan tool or oscilliscope. Check that the waveform is pretty steady. If the reading fluctuates then the sensor is likely bad and will need to be replaced. Try this, turn the ignition key to the on position, (engine not running) and pull the fuse to your ECM for 30 seconds and then re-install it. Once re-installed, start the engine and let idle for 1 min and then go for a test drive. If the engine stalls, let it. The ECM is relearning the sensors and engine, just restart it and after 1 min when the RPM drops. Go for a test drive and see if the service engine light comes back on and re-scan for the DTC codes and address the issues indicated by the DTC code.

  46. Napa is one of the auto parts stores that has their own branded brake pads. I have no idea who makes them, is it a reputable manufacturer? From what I see here, they have Napa Proformer, Napa Premium, Napa Ultra Premium, and Adaptive one. Good, Better, Best scenario. I guess the Napa proformer is the entry level brake pad and the Napa Ultra Premium is the best. If you have used Napa's brake pads before, please comment with your feedback.
